This is something caretakers would do well to understand. The suffering endured from psychotic symptoms manifests in different forms years after the initial onset of one's condition.
Years after the beginning of treatment. After trying every medication in their psychiatrist's bag of tricks. After visiting psych wards enough times for one to lose count. The patient, blessed with luck, finally begins to resemble a normal person once again. "Resemble" being the operative word here.
The realization that your very own brain can warp your reality beyond recognition is enough to destroy your self esteem. What good is hearing a supportive person tell you that a voice isn't real when you're not even certain the person speaking is real?
It's a blow to your sense of self worth. The model of reality presented to you by your brain is no longer a tool you can rely upon. It may be true that you appear to be functioning to a normal outside observer, but on the inside you feel as though you're in the presence of aliens.
A person learning to fake it has not been cured. They are not ready to rejoin society. They are not ready to fully support themselves. They are damaged so heavily that, as of right now, it seems beyond repair.
It's sad. It's unfortunate. Yet it's true.
